Was there anything I could do?
  • This is the coolest damn gadget ever, and it isn't made of plastic and silicon and doesn't come from a Shenzhen sweatshop. You must watch the video.

  • I'm not minding the new update page now that it uses a fixed font, but the rant from [info]naamah_darling is still heartwarming.

Wikipedia is a top-10 website run by a nonprofit with no money. This diagram should strike sufficient fear into the heart of anyone who knows what hosting costs. This is a begging letter: if you like the site, please send your bucks. (FAQ.) You can get a tax deduction in the US, Germany and France; we're still waiting for the Charity Commission to get around to our application for the UK. We also have some matching donors (so your dollars count twice) lined up for donations to the US Foundation from tomorrow.

(Uncyclopedia has of course followed accordingly.)

If you'd like to help but have no money, you could get your camera out. Or, for the truly adventurous, write stuff ;-)

I am feeling sufficiently awful that I am not watching Hogfather (probably watch the video later) but am in bed playing saved music videos from YouTube on my laptop. (VideoDownloader is my new favourite Firefox extension and the saved FLVs play nicely in VLC 0.8.6.) Three minutes of meaningless visuals and a song is about the limits of my attention span. The doctor on Friday said it's a virus and the cure is to wait. I am theoretically attempting work tomorrow, but [info]redcountess and [info]arkady consider this unlikely.

My Christmas shopping is almost done. Thanks, intarweb!

Very cool table. If I had the space and the cash, I'd have to own one.

Crédit Lyonnais had a table like that in one of the rooms we kept to overawe visiting savages and potential clients. It may still be there, long after CL departed, part of the fixtures and fittings of Number 5 Appold Street - actually, there may be four of them, one in each of the palatial circular rooms that take up an entire floor of the round turret on the South-Western corner of Broadwalk House.

If only Alexa was an accurate representation of the traffic a site gets. Does WP publish any real traffic stats on the site anywhere?

There's charts and stuff, er, somewhere. But Alexa is reliable enough to tell us that we have traffic roughly comparable on that scale.

I can't find the bandwidth charts (I know they exist), but here's some inside views:

Every moment of every day is a very special "JESUS CHRIST IT'S A LION GET IN THE CAR" moment for Wikimedia sysadmins!

Apparently these are the current network request graphs: http://www.nedworks.org/~mark/reqstats/

Hourly: http://www.nedworks.org/~mark/reqstats/reqstats-hourly.png

You can read the sysadmin ("developer" in Wikimedia jargon) mailing list here: http://mail.wikipedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-l/

mmmm... BigIRON...

we at work were just contemplating whether a vps could handle that load =P

That did however answer one of the issues i'm currently facing of DNS clustering, the pdns/geoip method looks very very interesting.

It apparently relies on a server backend they pay for (rather than being an insanely clever piece of coding), so I should really drop 'em a few bucks some time.

Doesn't http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/foundation/2/28/Wikimedia_2006_fs.pdf show that they have over $1M in the bank, and that they've had lots of bandwidth donated by Yahoo?

(Reply to this) (Thread)

Indeed! And they still need $1.5M more for the machines (bloody great database server, lots of smaller Squids and Apaches) and bandwidth out of the Florida data centre that will be used this year.

The auditors also recommended the Foundation hire more staff, but by far the biggest chunk of the cash is just for machines and bandwidth.

Here's the 2006 server purchases. We're currently running US$300k per quarter just in boxes.

1,5 million is still pushing it. It is 50.000 a day. The start has been slow.
